General Information

A Brief History

The Craterian Theatre opened in 1924 as a vaudeville house and also featured silent films. In its later life it functioned primarily as a first-run feature film venue. When multi-screen cinemas became popular in the late 1970s, the Craterian began to suffer from diminished use. In the early 1990s, the community of southern Oregon launched a campaign to raise over $5 million to renovate the theater as a live performing arts venue, and on March 1, 1997, the theater reopened as the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater. Ginger Rogers danced on the Craterian stage in 1926 and moved to Southern Oregon in the 1940s. She returned to the Craterian in 1993 to take part in a fundraising event to benefit the renovation campaign. Though the theater is named in her honor, it receives no financial support from her estate.

Smoking Laws

Please note that effective January 1st, 2002, Oregon's Smoke Free workplace law ORS 433.835-433.990 prohibits the use of any 'smoking device' on stage. This applies to tobacco/nicotine cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. If your production requires the use of these devices they must be herbal in nature and nicotine/tobacco-free.

Fire Regulations

Any open flame, pyrotechnics, etc. must be pre-approved by the facility and local Fire Marshall. A demonstration in advance may be necessary for approval.
